What began as a program planned for 150 participants turned into a remarkable community gathering as 292 people attended the Otuoke edition of Project ACE 3rd Edition 2026, organised by Safe Haven Positivity Initiative (SHPI). The impressive turnout exceeded the organisation’s initial target by nearly 95 per cent, highlighting the importance of taking mental health education and youth empowerment directly to grassroots communities.

Held under the theme “Street-Smart & Steady: Building Resilient Young People for a Healthier, Brighter Future,” the program brought together young people, adults, and other community members to discuss mental well-being, substance use awareness, emotional resilience, and positive behavioural choices.

Beyond the impressive attendance, however, the program created opportunities for learning, meaningful conversations, and access to support. Participants engaged with important issues affecting their lives and communities, while some expressed interest in seeking counselling after the event. For SHPI, these responses reinforced the need to make mental health information and support services more accessible to people who need them.

An Unexpected Turnout Reflecting Community Interest

The response in Otuoke exceeded expectations from the outset. Although the organizers had planned for 150 participants, 292 people attended, demonstrating considerable interest in the program and its message.

More importantly, the gathering brought together people of different ages and backgrounds, creating an opportunity for community-wide engagement. Rather than limiting conversations about mental health to young people alone, Project ACE encouraged broader participation and highlighted the role that families and communities play in promoting healthier choices.

Throughout the program, participants had opportunities to learn, ask questions, and reflect on issues such as emotional well-being, substance use, and responsible decision-making. Consequently, the event became more than an awareness campaign; it provided a space for people to engage with subjects that are often misunderstood or difficult to discuss openly.

The turnout also reinforced the value of community-based initiatives that bring relevant information closer to the people who need it.

From Mental Health Awareness to Seeking Support

While the attendance figure was encouraging, some of the most meaningful outcomes emerged from the conversations that followed the presentations.

During the program, community members shared testimonials about their experiences and the value of the information they received. In addition, some participants expressed interest in accessing counselling services, indicating a willingness to seek further guidance and support.

These responses highlighted an important connection between mental health education and help-seeking behaviour. Although awareness helps people understand their challenges, knowing where to find appropriate support can be an equally important step towards improving their well-being.

For this reason, SHPI considers the interest in counselling a significant aspect of the Otuoke engagement. It demonstrates why mental health initiatives should not end when an event concludes but should also help individuals identify appropriate avenues for continued support.

Furthermore, the experiences shared by participants reinforced the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces where people can ask questions, discuss personal concerns, and learn that seeking help is a positive step towards addressing life’s challenges.

Empowering Young People with the Right Information

At the heart of Project ACE is the belief that young people are better equipped to make positive decisions when they have access to accurate information, practical knowledge, and appropriate support.

With this in mind, the 2026 edition focused on mental well-being, emotional resilience, substance use awareness, and positive behavioural choices. These issues are particularly relevant to young people who may encounter social pressure, emotional difficulties, and situations that require careful decision-making.

Through education and open discussion, Project ACE seeks to help young people understand the consequences of their choices, recognise potential risks, and develop healthier ways of responding to life’s challenges.

Nevertheless, promoting youth well-being requires the involvement of more than young people alone. The participation of adults and other community members in Otuoke demonstrated that building healthier environments is a shared responsibility.

When parents, community leaders, organizations, and young people engage in these conversations together, they create greater opportunities for understanding, guidance, and support.

Consequently, Project ACE continues to promote a community centered approach to youth empowerment, recognizing that informed individuals and supportive communities are both essential to lasting change.

Bringing Speakers, Partners, and Community Advocates Together

The success of the Otuoke program was made possible through the contributions of speakers, partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders who shared a commitment to improving community well-being.

Among the featured speakers were Chief Dr. Antonia Garner, Executive Director of Think Health Education Social Initiative; Tare Maureen Amananaghan of Fringe Voices Development Foundation; Bolatito Folarinmi, Executive Director of Shielded Lives Initiative; Prince E. Amiekumo; Evangelist Counselor Akhigbe Queen; and Brenda Nagberi, Esq., Executive Director of Bremon Educational Consult.

Through their participation, the program benefited from contributions from different professional and advocacy backgrounds, helping to advance its goal of providing relevant information and encouraging constructive conversations.

The initiative was endorsed by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health and supported by collaborating organizations and partners committed to community development and well-being.

Meanwhile, volunteers and other members of the organizing team played an important role in coordinating activities and supporting participant engagement. Their collective efforts helped create an environment in which community members could learn, interact, and participate in the program.

SHPI appreciates everyone who contributed their time, knowledge, resources, and support towards making the Otuoke engagement possible.

Beyond Attendance: Building Lasting Community Impact

Although the participation of 292 people represents an important milestone, SHPI recognizes that the true value of a community program extends beyond the number of people who attend.

Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that participants leave with useful information, a better understanding of the issues discussed, and greater awareness of where to seek help when necessary.

In Otuoke, the testimonials shared and the interest expressed in counselling provided encouraging indications of engagement. However, sustained impact will depend on continued awareness, access to appropriate services, and opportunities for community members to apply what they have learned.

For SHPI, this understanding informs its commitment to promoting mental health education alongside counselling and other support initiatives. By connecting awareness with appropriate services, the organization aims to help individuals move from understanding their challenges towards taking constructive steps to address them.

Furthermore, community-based programs can help challenge misconceptions about mental health and substance use, encouraging more informed and compassionate responses to people experiencing difficulties.

Through continued engagement, SHPI hopes to strengthen community understanding and contribute to environments in which seeking support is encouraged rather than stigmatized.

From Otuoke to Toru-Orua: Extending the Reach of Project ACE

Following the Otuoke program on October 8, 2026, Project ACE continued its community engagement in Toru-Orua on October 10, 2026.

The two engagements formed part of SHPI’s broader effort to bring mental health education and youth empowerment to grassroots communities across Bayelsa State.

By taking the program to different communities, the organization sought to expand access to relevant information and create more opportunities for people to participate in conversations about mental well-being, substance use prevention, and positive life choices.

The experience in Otuoke provided encouraging momentum for this mission. In particular, the turnout demonstrated the importance of creating opportunities for communities to engage directly with issues affecting their lives.

As the organization continues its work, the lessons from the program will help reinforce its commitment to community engagement, accessible information, and appropriate support services.

A Shared Commitment to Healthier Communities

The Otuoke edition of Project ACE 3rd Edition 2026 marked an encouraging milestone for Safe Haven Positivity Initiative. By attracting 292 participants against an initial target of 150, the program exceeded expectations while creating opportunities for education, connection, and further support.

However, the significance of the event lies not only in the number of people who attended but also in the conversations it encouraged and the interest it generated in counselling and mental health support.

SHPI extends its sincere appreciation to the speakers, partners, volunteers, community leaders, and residents who contributed to the Program’s success. Their participation reflects the value of working together to promote healthier choices and stronger communities.

Looking ahead, the organization remains committed to empowering young people with accurate information, promoting emotional resilience, raising awareness of substance use, and encouraging positive behavioural choices.

Through Project ACE, SHPI continues to champion a simple but important message: when people have access to the right information, supportive environments, and appropriate services, they are better positioned to make informed decisions about their well-being.

The work does not end when a program concludes. Instead, every conversation, every new understanding, and every step towards seeking support creates another opportunity to make a difference.

Suicide prevention is not only about responding when someone is already in crisis. It is also about creating communities where people feel safe enough to speak about emotional pain, ask for help, and know that their lives matter.

In 2026, suicide remains an important global public health concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year, with the majority of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. WHO also notes that for every person who dies by suicide, many more people attempt suicide.

These numbers represent real people such as parents, children, friends, students, colleagues, partners and community members.

Behind every statistic is a human story.

That is why suicide prevention requires more than awareness. It requires compassion, early intervention, responsible conversations and access to appropriate support.

What Is Suicide Prevention?

Suicide prevention refers to the actions taken to reduce the risk of suicide and help people experiencing suicidal thoughts or severe emotional distress.

Prevention can happen at many levels.

It can begin with one person noticing that a friend is struggling. It can happen when a parent takes a child’s emotional concerns seriously. It can happen when a teacher recognises changes in a student’s behaviour. It can also happen when communities make mental health support easier to access.

According to WHO, effective suicide prevention includes early identification and support, strengthening emotional and social skills, responsible communication about suicide, and reducing access to highly lethal means.

Suicide prevention is therefore everyone’s responsibility.

Why Suicide Prevention Matters in 2026

Life can place people under enormous pressure.

Financial difficulties, relationship problems, unemployment, academic pressure, grief, chronic illness, abuse, loneliness, discrimination and other stressful experiences can affect a person’s ability to cope.

Sometimes several difficulties happen at once.

A person who appears strong on the outside may be struggling deeply on the inside.

Suicidal thoughts can also occur during periods of intense emotional crisis. Importantly, suicide is rarely the result of one simple cause or one event. The factors involved are often complex and can include psychological, social, biological, environmental and economic circumstances.

This is why we should avoid statements such as, “They had everything,” or “Nothing was wrong with them.”

We may never know the full story someone was carrying.

Understanding Suicidal Thoughts

Having suicidal thoughts does not mean a person is weak, dramatic or attention-seeking.

It can be a sign that someone is experiencing severe emotional distress and feels unable to see a way forward.

WHO states that people experiencing suicidal thoughts can recover and that help is available. Talking about suicide does not cause someone to become suicidal. In fact, asking directly and compassionately about suicidal thoughts can help a person feel understood and supported.

A person may experience thoughts such as:

Feeling that life is no longer worth living

Feeling hopeless about the future

Believing that other people would be better off without them

Feeling trapped by a difficult situation

Feeling unbearable emotional pain

Believing that there is no solution to their problems

These experiences should never be dismissed.

Warning Signs We Should Take Seriously

There is no single warning sign that proves someone is suicidal. However, noticeable changes in someone’s emotions, behaviour or communication can indicate that they need support.

Possible warning signs include:

Talking about death or wanting to die

Saying they feel hopeless or have no reason to live

Saying they are a burden to others

Suddenly withdrawing from family and friends

Losing interest in activities they previously enjoyed

Significant changes in mood

Giving away important possessions

Saying goodbye to people in an unusual way

Looking for ways to harm themselves

Increasing alcohol or drug use

Engaging in unusually risky behaviour

Experiencing intense emotional distress

WHO recommends taking these signs seriously, particularly when there is a noticeable change in a person’s behaviour or circumstances.

You do not need to be certain that someone is suicidal before showing concern.

If something feels different, check in.

How to Start a Conversation About Suicide

One of the most powerful things you can do is start a caring conversation.

You do not need perfect words.

You can simply say:

“I’ve noticed that you’ve not been yourself lately. How are you really doing?”

If you are concerned about suicide, you can ask directly:

“Have you been thinking about hurting yourself or ending your life?”

Asking the question does not put the idea into someone’s mind. It can instead create an opportunity for the person to speak honestly about what they are experiencing.

When they talk, listen without immediately judging, criticising or trying to solve everything.

You can say:

“I’m here with you.”

“Thank you for telling me.”

“You don’t have to handle this alone.”

“Let’s find some help together.”

“Your life matters to me.”

Sometimes the most important thing is simply helping someone feel less alone.

What Not to Say

Certain responses, although sometimes intended to encourage someone, can make them feel misunderstood.

Avoid saying:

“Other people have bigger problems.”

“You just need to be strong.”

“Think about your family.”

“You have everything to be grateful for.”

“Stop thinking negatively.”

“You’re only looking for attention.”

These statements can shut down communication.

Instead, acknowledge the person’s feelings without judging them.

You do not have to agree with every thought they have. You simply need to take their distress seriously.

What Should You Do If Someone Is at Immediate Risk?

If someone tells you that they intend to end their life or you believe they are in immediate danger, treat the situation seriously.

Do not leave the person alone if it is safe for you to remain with them.

Help them move away from anything they could use to harm themselves, where this can be done safely. Contact an appropriate emergency service, crisis service, health professional or trusted person who can provide immediate assistance.

Encourage the person to receive professional support from a mental health professional, doctor, counsellor or other qualified healthcare provider.

WHO specifically recommends staying with a person who is in immediate danger, seeking urgent professional assistance and reducing access to means of self-harm where possible.

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or believe you may act on them, please do not face the situation alone. Move toward another person, tell someone you trust what is happening, and seek urgent professional or emergency support.

Suicide Prevention Starts Before a Crisis

Prevention should not begin only when someone reaches breaking point.

We can build protective environments long before a crisis occurs.

1. Encourage Open Conversations

Families, schools, workplaces, faith communities and youth organisations can create spaces where people can discuss emotional struggles without being mocked or judged.

Talking about mental health should become normal.

2. Take Emotional Changes Seriously

A person does not have to reach a crisis before they deserve support.

Changes in sleep, mood, behaviour, relationships or daily functioning can be reasons to check in.

3. Strengthen Social Connections

Connection can be protective.

Regularly checking on friends, relatives, neighbours and colleagues can make a difference—especially for people who may be isolated.

A simple message such as “How are you doing?” can open an important conversation.

4. Make Professional Support Accessible

Counselling and mental health services should not be treated as a last resort.

People should be encouraged to seek professional support when emotional difficulties begin affecting their safety, relationships, work, education or everyday life.

5. Reduce Stigma

Stigma can prevent people from asking for help.

When people fear being labelled “crazy,” weak or attention-seeking, they may hide what they are experiencing.

A compassionate community makes it easier for people to say:

“I need help.”

And it responds with:

“Let’s get you the help you need.”

Young People Need Special Attention

Young people can experience significant emotional pressure from academic expectations, relationships, family conflict, social comparison, bullying, financial difficulties, uncertainty about the future and other challenges.

WHO identifies suicide as a major cause of death among young people globally.

Adults should therefore avoid assuming that young people’s problems are “just a phase.”

Listen to them.

Take their concerns seriously.

Create safe spaces where they can talk.

And when necessary, connect them with appropriate professional support.

Suicide Prevention Is a Community Responsibility

Suicide prevention cannot be left entirely to mental health professionals.

Families have a role.

Schools have a role.

Healthcare workers have a role.

Community leaders have a role.

Employers have a role.

The media has a role.

Governments and policymakers have a role.

Friends and neighbours have a role.

WHO describes suicide prevention as a multisectoral responsibility involving health and other sectors, including education, labour, agriculture, justice, business and the media.

Everyone can contribute to creating environments where people are more likely to seek help and less likely to suffer in silence.

We Also Need to Talk About Responsible Media Coverage

How suicide is discussed publicly matters.

Sensational headlines, graphic descriptions, speculation about causes and overly detailed reporting can be harmful.

Responsible communication should focus on prevention, hope, recovery and available support.

When discussing suicide online, avoid romanticising or glorifying suicide. Avoid presenting it as an inevitable response to difficult circumstances.

Instead, use your platform to remind people that help exists.

Hope Is Part of Prevention

Suicide prevention is ultimately about creating pathways back to hope.

A person experiencing suicidal thoughts may not be able to imagine a better future at that moment.

That does not mean a better future is impossible.

Feelings can change.

Circumstances can change.

Support can make a difference.

Treatment can help.

Relationships can provide connection.

And people can recover.

WHO notes that suicidal crises can be temporary and that suicidal thoughts are not necessarily permanent.

This is why we should never assume that someone’s darkest moment defines their entire future.

What Can You Do Today?

You do not need to be a psychologist or mental health professional to contribute to suicide prevention.

You can:

Check on someone.

Listen without judgement.

Take warning signs seriously.

Encourage professional help.

Learn about mental health.

Challenge harmful stigma.

Share reliable mental health information.

Create supportive spaces for people to talk.

And perhaps most importantly:

Do not be afraid to ask someone how they are really doing.

A Message to Anyone Who Is Struggling

If you are reading this while experiencing emotional pain, please remember this:

You do not have to solve your entire life today.

You only need to take the next safe step.

Tell someone.

Stay connected.

Seek professional support.

Move toward people who can help you stay safe.

What you are feeling deserves attention, not shame.

You are more than this difficult moment.

And asking for help is not a failure. It is an act of courage.

Let Us Choose Connection Over Silence

Suicide prevention is not about having one perfect conversation or finding one perfect solution.

It is about creating a culture where people know they can speak.

It is about noticing when someone is struggling.

It is about responding with compassion rather than judgement.

It is about making professional support accessible.

And it is about reminding people, especially during their darkest moments, that their story does not have to end there.

In 2026, let us move beyond simply saying “suicide prevention matters.”

Let us become people who actively prevent suicide by listening, connecting, educating, supporting and speaking up.

One conversation can open a door to help.

One person who chooses to listen can make someone feel less alone.

And one person who reaches out for help can begin a different chapter.

If You or Someone You Know Needs Help

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency service or go to the nearest emergency department. You can also contact a qualified mental health professional, counsellor, doctor or trusted person who can help you access urgent support.

If someone is at immediate risk, do not leave them alone and seek urgent professional assistance.

You are not alone. Help is available.

The post World Suicide Prevention Day 2026: Creating Hope Through Action first appeared on Safe Haven Positivity Initiative.

Understanding, Navigating, and Overcoming Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad.Additionally, everyone experiences difficult moments disappointment, grief, failure, loneliness, or discouragement. Moreover, these emotions are a normal part of life and often ease with time. Depression, however, can be different. As a result, it can persist for weeks or months and affect thoughts, feelings, sleep, work, and daily life.

Additionally, for someone experiencing depression, even ordinary tasks can feel overwhelming. However, getting out of bed and basic tasks may require enormous effort.

Depression is a serious mental health condition, but it is also treatable. Thus, understanding it is one of the first steps toward seeking help and supporting those who may be struggling silently.

Clinical depression, also known as major depressive disorder, involves persistent changes in mood and functioning. It can affect a person’s emotions, thoughts, physical health, relationships, and ability to carry out daily responsibilities.

Unlike ordinary sadness, depression does not always have an obvious cause. Someone can have supportive family members, a good job, financial stability, or other positive circumstances and still experience depression.

Depression is not a character flaw, a lack of faith, laziness, or simply a decision to “be positive.” It is a complex condition influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors.

What Causes Depression?

There is rarely one single cause of depression. Instead, different factors can interact and increase a person’s vulnerability.

1. Biological Factors

Brain function, genetics, hormones, sleep, and physical health can all influence depression.

Depression involves changes in brain systems responsible for mood, motivation, stress responses, sleep, and emotional processing. While neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine are involved, depression cannot be reduced to a simple “chemical imbalance.”

2. Genetics and Family History

Depression can run in families. Having a close relative who has experienced depression may increase a person’s vulnerability, although genetics do not determine someone’s destiny.

Environmental experiences and individual circumstances also matter.

3. Trauma and Chronic Stress

Difficult experiences can contribute significantly to depression.

Childhood adversity, abuse, the loss of a loved one, relationship breakdown, financial difficulties, unemployment, prolonged conflict, loneliness, and other forms of chronic stress can affect emotional well-being and the body’s response to stress.

Sometimes, depression develops after a clearly identifiable event. At other times, it appears without an obvious trigger.

4. Physical Health Conditions

Certain medical conditions can contribute to depressive symptoms or produce symptoms that resemble depression.

For example, thyroid disorders, chronic pain, neurological conditions, hormonal changes, and some medications can affect mood and energy.

This is one reason professional evaluation can be important when depressive symptoms persist.

How Depression Affects Everyday Life

Depression does not affect only emotions. It can influence almost every part of daily living.

1. Work, Career, and Education

Depression can make concentration and decision-making extremely difficult.

A person may struggle to:

– Focus on lectures or meetings

– Complete assignments

– Meet deadlines

– Remember information

– Make decisions

– Start or finish tasks

– Maintain their previous level of productivity

What appears to others as procrastination or lack of commitment may actually be a person struggling with significant psychological distress.

This can create a painful cycle: poor performance leads to guilt and anxiety, which can make the depression even harder to manage.

2. Relationships and Social Life

Depression can change the way people interact with those around them.

Someone who is depressed may become quieter, withdraw from friends, stop attending social gatherings, or avoid conversations.

Unfortunately, withdrawal can easily be misunderstood.

A friend may think, “They don’t care about me anymore.”

A partner may think, “Why are they pushing me away?”

A family member may think, “They’re becoming disrespectful.”

But sometimes the reality is much simpler: the person does not have the emotional energy to connect.

This is why communication and compassion matter.

3. Sleep, Appetite, and Physical Health

Depression can affect the body as much as the mind.

Some people experience insomnia, while others sleep excessively. Some lose their appetite, while others eat more than usual.

Changes may also include:

– Fatigue

– Headaches

– Body aches

– Digestive problems

– Muscle tension

– Changes in weight

– Reduced energy

– Feeling physically slowed down

Because these symptoms can also have physical causes, persistent or concerning symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

4. Personal Care and Daily Responsibilities

One of the most misunderstood aspects of depression is how difficult basic tasks can become.

Someone may struggle to:

– Take a shower

– Brush their teeth

– Wash clothes

– Cook

– Clean their room

– Respond to messages

– Leave the house

– Attend appointments

To an outside observer, these things may appear easy.

For someone experiencing depression, however, they can feel enormous.

This is why telling a depressed person to “just get up and do it” is rarely helpful.

Navigating Depression: Steps Toward Recovery

Recovery from depression is not always immediate, and there is no single method that works for everyone.

What helps one person may not work for another. The important thing is to avoid suffering alone and to seek appropriate support.

1. Talk to a Qualified Professional

Professional support can make a significant difference.

A doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, or other qualified mental-health professional can help determine what someone is experiencing and recommend appropriate treatment.

Psychotherapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help people identify unhealthy thought patterns and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations.

For some people, medication may also be recommended by a qualified medical professional.

Medication should not be started, stopped, or changed without appropriate medical guidance.

2. Start Small

When depression makes life feel overwhelming, enormous goals can become discouraging.

Instead, focus on small actions.

Get out of bed.

Drink some water.

Take a shower.

Open the curtains.

Eat something.

Step outside for a few minutes.

Take a short walk.

One small action may not solve depression, but small actions can help create momentum.

Recovery does not always begin with a giant breakthrough. Sometimes it begins with one small decision.

3. Move Your Body Gently

Physical activity can support mental well-being.

You do not necessarily need an intense workout. A short walk, gentle stretching, dancing to a song, or another form of manageable movement can be a reasonable place to start.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is movement.

4. Fight Isolation With Connection

Depression often tells people to withdraw.

But prolonged isolation can make things worse.

You do not need to attend a large gathering or explain everything you’re going through to everyone.

Start with one person.

Send a message.

Make a phone call.

Sit with someone.

Tell a trusted person, “I’m not doing very well right now.”

Sometimes, simply allowing another person to know what you are experiencing can make the burden feel less invisible.

5. Practice Self-Compassion

Perhaps one of the hardest lessons during depression is learning not to hate yourself for struggling.

You may not accomplish everything today. You may cancel plans,You may have a difficult morning after having a good week,That does not mean you have failed,Recovery is rarely a perfectly straight line, Treat yourself with the same patience you would offer someone you love who was going through a serious illness.

When Should You Seek Help?

If feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, exhaustion, or other depressive symptoms persist and begin interfering with work, education, relationships, or everyday life, consider speaking with a qualified healthcare or mental-health professional.

And if someone is thinking about suicide, self-harm, or feels that they may not be able to keep themselves safe, seek urgent professional help or emergency assistance immediately.

You do not have to wait until things become unbearable before asking for help.

Depression Does Not Have to Be the End of the Story

Depression can make the future look empty.

It can convince a person that nothing will change, that nobody understands, and that the struggle will last forever.

But depression is treatable, and experiencing it does not make someone weak.

The person who is struggling today may not feel the same forever.

Sometimes healing begins with professional treatment. Sometimes it begins with a conversation. Sometimes it begins with getting out of bed and taking one small step.

Whatever the beginning looks like, the important thing is to keep moving toward help,You are more than what you are going through, And sometimes, beyond the blue, there is still a way forward.

self-confidence, self-esteem, personal growth, confidence tips, success mindset, self-improvement

INTRODUCTION

Self-confidence is the foundation of success in every area of life. Whether you’re a student, entrepreneur, employee, or leader, believing in yourself influences the decisions you make, the opportunities you pursue, and the challenges you’re willing to face. People with confidence are more likely to speak up, take risks, build healthy relationships, and achieve their goals.

The good news is that self-confidence is not something only a few people are born with. It is a skill that anyone can develop through consistent practice, positive habits, and the right mindset. If you’ve ever doubted yourself or felt afraid to chase your dreams, these ten practical strategies will help you build genuine, lasting confidence.

Power of self confidence

1. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

Confidence begins with your thoughts. If you constantly tell yourself that you’re not good enough, you’ll begin to believe it. Instead, focus on your strengths and remind yourself that every successful person started somewhere.

Whenever self-doubt appears, replace it with positive statements such as, “I am capable,” “I can learn,” and “I will improve with time.” The way you speak to yourself shapes the way you see yourself.

2. SET SMALL GOALS AND CELEBRATE EVERY ACHIEVEMENT

Many people lose confidence because they focus only on big dreams while ignoring small victories. Break your goals into smaller, achievable steps.

For example, if you want to become a public speaker, start by speaking during a class discussion or a small meeting. Each accomplishment builds momentum and proves that you’re capable of achieving even greater things.

3. LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY

Knowledge creates confidence. The more you know, the more prepared you feel when facing challenges.

Read books, watch educational videos, attend seminars, take online courses, or learn practical skills that can improve your career and personal life. Continuous learning gives you the confidence to handle new situations.

4. TAKE CARE OF YOUR PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

Your confidence is closely connected to your overall well-being.

Exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, get enough sleep, and manage stress. Taking care of yourself improves your mood, energy, and self-image. Even simple habits like maintaining good posture and dressing neatly can make you feel more confident.

5. STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Growth happens when you challenge yourself. Doing only what feels comfortable keeps your confidence from growing.

Speak up during meetings, apply for the job you want, start the business you’ve been planning, or introduce yourself to new people. Every challenge you overcome makes you stronger and more confident.

6. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE AND SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE

The people around you influence how you think and feel about yourself.

Spend time with friends, mentors, and family members who encourage you, inspire you, and believe in your potential. Limit your exposure to people who constantly criticize, discourage, or drain your motivation.

7. LEARN FROM FAILURE INSTEAD OF FEARING IT

Failure is not proof that you’re incapable. It is part of the learning process.

Some of the world’s most successful people experienced repeated failures before achieving success. Instead of asking, “Why did I fail?” ask, “What can I learn from this experience?” Every setback contains valuable lessons that prepare you for future success.

8. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS

One of the biggest confidence killers is comparison.

Everyone has a different journey, background, and timeline. Comparing your beginning to someone else’s success only creates unnecessary pressure. Instead, compare yourself with who you were yesterday and focus on becoming a better version of yourself.

9. DEVELOP STRONG COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Confident people communicate clearly and respectfully.

Practice maintaining eye contact, speaking clearly, listening carefully, and expressing your opinions without fear. The better your communication skills become, the more confident you’ll feel in both personal and professional settings.

10. STAY CONSISTENT AND NEVER STOP GROWING

Confidence isn’t built overnight. It’s the result of consistent daily actions.

Continue learning, practicing, improving, and believing in yourself even when progress seems slow. Small improvements made consistently over time lead to remarkable personal growth.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Building self-confidence is a lifelong journey, not a one-time achievement. There will be moments when you doubt yourself or face setbacks, but those moments do not define your future. What truly matters is your willingness to keep learning, growing, and moving forward.

Remember, confidence doesn’t mean believing you’ll never fail. It means believing that no matter what happens, you have the strength, resilience, and determination to overcome challenges and keep pursuing your dreams.

Believe in yourself. Invest in your growth. Stay consistent. Your confidence today will shape the success you achieve tomorrow.

Mindful Reset for Women: Reclaiming Peace in a Busy World

In today’s fast-moving world, many women live on a constant schedule. Between work, family responsibilities, relationships, and personal expectations, life can begin to feel like a never-ending race. Days pass quickly, yet the mind remains full, tired, and restless. In the middle of all this pressure, one important thing is often forgotten peace.

Life of a woman

A mindful reset is the intentional act of pausing, breathing, and reconnecting with yourself. It is not about running away from responsibilities; rather, it is about creating moments of calm that help you face life with clarity and strength.

The Weight Women Carry

Women often play multiple roles in society. A woman may be a professional, a mother, a partner, a caregiver, and a friend all at once. Each role comes with expectations, and sometimes those expectations can feel overwhelming.

Many women silently carry emotional burdens while still trying to appear strong. Over time, this pressure can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, or even emotional burnout. A mindful reset offers a way to step back and restore balance.

Understanding a Mindful Reset

A mindful reset simply means slowing down enough to become aware of your thoughts, emotions, and physical state. It is the process of giving your mind a break from the constant noise of daily life.

It does not require expensive programs or complicated routines. Sometimes it is as simple as taking a quiet walk, breathing deeply for a few minutes, or sitting in silence without distractions.

Mindfulness helps a woman reconnect with her inner self, the part of her that exists beyond stress, responsibilities, and expectations.

Simple Ways Women Can Practice a Mindful Reset

1. Create Small Quiet Moments

Even ten minutes of silence can refresh the mind. Sitting quietly, breathing slowly, and letting the mind rest can help reduce mental tension.

2. Step Away from Digital Noise

Phones, social media, and constant notifications keep the mind busy. Taking short breaks from screens allows the brain to relax and refocus.

3. Listen to Your Body

Fatigue, headaches, and irritability are often signals that the body needs rest. Paying attention to these signs helps prevent burnout.

4. Practice Gratitude

Taking time to appreciate small things in life a peaceful morning, a supportive friend, or a simple accomplishment can shift the mind toward positivity.

5. Protect Personal Boundaries

Women often feel pressured to say yes to everything. Learning to say no when necessary is an important part of maintaining emotional balance.

Why a Mindful Reset Matters

When a woman gives herself permission to pause and care for her mental well-being, she becomes stronger, clearer, and more emotionally present. A calm mind allows better decisions, healthier relationships, and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Mindfulness does not remove life’s challenges, but it changes the way those challenges are handled.

Reclaiming Your Peace

Peace is not something reserved for vacations or special moments. It can exist within everyday life when intentional pauses are created.

For many women, the journey toward peace begins with a simple realization: caring for others should not mean forgetting yourself.

A mindful reset is a reminder that your well-being matters too. By slowing down, breathing deeply, and reconnecting with yourself, you can reclaim the calm that busy life often tries to take away.

In a world that constantly demands more, sometimes the most powerful thing a woman can do is pause and return to herself.

One of the most dangerous misconceptions about depression is the belief that it is a “poor man’s problem.” Many people assume that sadness, emotional breakdowns, and mental exhaustion are the result of financial hardship alone. In this line of thinking, money becomes the cure, and wealth the shield. But reality tells a very different story.

Depression has no social class.

It does not ask how much you earn, where you live, or how respected you are. It does not check your wardrobe, your bank balance, or your social media following. Depression is deeply human, and it can affect anyone rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown.

There are people who sleep on luxury beds yet cry themselves to sleep. There are individuals surrounded by applause who feel painfully alone. There are successful professionals, celebrities, religious leaders, and business owners who silently battle thoughts they cannot explain. On the surface, their lives look complete. Inside, they are breaking.

This is why equating depression with poverty is not only incorrect, it is harmful.

Money can solve many physical problems, but it does not automatically heal the mind. Financial comfort may reduce certain stresses, but it does not erase grief, trauma, loneliness, childhood wounds, emotional neglect, loss, or identity struggles. A person can have everything society celebrates and still feel empty, disconnected, and overwhelmed.

Depression often hides behind smiles.

Some of the most depressed people are the ones who laugh the loudest, motivate others, and show up strong for everyone else. They have learned how to function while hurting. They know how to wear strength like a uniform, even when their inner world is collapsing.

This is especially true in societies where vulnerability is mistaken for weakness. People are taught to “be strong,” “man up,” or “pray it away.” As a result, many suffer in silence, ashamed to admit they are not okay, especially if their lives appear successful. After all, “what do you have to be depressed about?”

But pain does not need permission.

The human mind is complex, and depression can stem from emotional exhaustion, unresolved trauma, chronic stress, hormonal imbalance, loss of purpose, or deep internal conflict. Sometimes, it comes without a clear reason at all. That does not make it less real.

When we reduce depression to poverty alone, we silence those who don’t fit the stereotype. We dismiss their pain, invalidate their experience, and push them further into isolation. We also create a dangerous narrative that wealth equals happiness, leaving many confused and ashamed when money fails to fix what hurts inside.

Depression is not laziness.

It is not ingratitude.

It is not weakness.

It is a serious mental health condition that deserves understanding, compassion, and proper care regardless of who it affects.

If we truly want to address depression, we must stop judging pain by appearance. We must listen more and assume less. We must create safe spaces where people can say, “I am not okay,” without being reminded of how “lucky” they are supposed to feel.

Whether someone lives in a mansion or a one-room apartment, emotional suffering is still suffering. Tears weigh the same, no matter where they fall.

Depression has no social class.

It is not selective. It is not fair. And it does not discriminate.

What can make a difference, however, is empathy. Sometimes, the most powerful help is not advice or comparison, but presence letting people know they are seen, heard, and not alone.

Because healing begins when we finally accept this truth:

Mental health is a human issue, not an economic one.

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly “on.” Between digital notifications, career pressures, and family responsibilities, our mental energy can quickly drain. When we reach this point, we often experience “brain fog” or emotional exhaustion.

A mindful reset isn’t about escaping your life or taking an expensive vacation; it’s about intentionally pausing to reconnect with your internal state. By practicing a reset, you transition from “surviving” to “thriving.”

Signs You Need a Mindful Reset

Before we dive into the steps, it’s important to recognize the “check engine” lights of your mind. You might need a reset if you are:

Feeling irritable over minor inconveniences.

Experiencing “doom-scrolling” habits on social media.

Feeling physically tired despite getting enough sleep.

Losing interest in hobbies you once enjoyed.

Recognizing these signs early is the first step toward prevention. For a deeper look at identifying these triggers, explore our guide on Understanding Mental Health Triggers.

1. Disconnect to Reconnect

We often stay trapped in a “digital relationship” with our devices that we never consciously agreed to. Constant notifications keep our cortisol levels (the stress hormone) elevated.

The Action: Set aside just 10 to 20 minutes to put your phone in another room. Use this time to sit in silence or look out a window.

The Benefit: This reduces sensory overload and allows you to “take notice” of your actual environment, a key pillar of well-being supported by the National Health Service (NHS).

2. The “5-4-3-2-1” Grounding Technique

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of where we are and what we’re doing, without becoming overly reactive to what’s going on around us.

The Action: Acknowledge 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.

The Benefit: This technique forces your brain to switch from “anxiety mode” (future-focused) to “sensory mode” (present-focused).

3. Mindful Movement: Beyond the Gym

Physical activity is a cornerstone of positive mental health, but it doesn’t have to be a high-intensity workout.

The Action: Try “mindful walking.” Focus on the sensation of your feet hitting the ground and the rhythm of your breath.

The Benefit: Exercise releases endorphins, which act as natural stress fighters. Learn more about the link between movement and mood from the World Health Organization.

4. The Power of Radical Kindness

When we are stressed, we tend to turn inward and isolate. However, reaching out is often the best way to heal.

The Action: Perform one small, “low-stakes” act of kindness. This could be sending an encouraging text to a friend or volunteering for an hour with a local group.

The Benefit: Altruism creates a “helper’s high,” lowering blood pressure and improving self-esteem.

5. Establishing Internal Boundaries

Identify what disrupts your peace and set a boundary against it. This includes the way you talk to yourself.

The Action: Replace a critical thought with a neutral or positive affirmation. Instead of “I’m failing,” try “I am currently learning how to handle this.”

The Benefit: Boundaries help maintain a supportive internal environment.

Though the conversation around mental health is getting louder in Nigeria, it is still in the shadow of misunderstanding and stigma. People have developed harmful myths and stereotypes due to a lack of accurate information about mental health, illness, and services. The first step in breaking the silence is altering the narrative.

In this article, we debunk five of the most common myths about mental health in Nigeria.

Myth 1: Mental Illness is a Spiritual or Religious Problem

This is one of the strongest beliefs, and yet it often results in people pursuing a spiritual resolution rather than getting professional help.

The Fact: Faith can certainly empower and give strength, but mental illnesses are recognized medical conditions. Through the complexity of genetic influences, brain chemistry, psychological trauma, and environmental stress, mental illness can develop. Just like you wouldn’t pray away a physical illness without receiving medical care, you should not attempt to do that for a mental illness. Therapists and psychiatrists are trained to use evidence-based interventions, like therapy and medications, to treat the actual causes of the respective conditions.

Myth 2: Only ‘Mad’ People Have Mental Health Issues

The overwhelming majority of the Nigerian media and pop culture tends to depict mental health problems as black or white i.e. If you aren’t totally losing control, you’re fine we have no problem.

The Reality: Mental health is a spectrum and we all have it, much like physical health, and it can wax and wane through life. Conditions such as anxiety, depression and stress are very common, and they don’t have to mean that we need to be totally unhinged. They can show up in sleepless nights, ongoing sadness, being moody, and a lack of motivation. Once we acknowledge and understand that mental health is something we all share, we’ll start to care for it, the same way we care for physical health.

Myth 3: Talking About Your Problems is a Sign of Weakness

Throughout many cultures, including our own, we espouse the notion of resilience and strength. This is often convert into the act of “suffering in silence.”

The Truth: The exact opposite of that is true. Asking for help and talking about what is bothering you is the ultimate demonstration of courage and strength. It is the first step to engaging in proactive behaviour to change your well being. Therapy creates an objective, confidential space to share about yourself without judgement. A therapist has training to listen and provide you with tools, to help you engage with challenges, empowering you rather than belittling you.

Myth 4: Mental Health Issues Are Just a Foreign Concept

It is not uncommon to hear the words “mental health problems” described as a “white person’s disease” or hear that Nigerians are too resilient to have mental health problems.

The Truth: Mental health problems do not discriminate based on race, nationality, or region. The conditions related to poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and social inequality in Nigeria present enormous stresses, all of which contribute to the development and the worsening of mental health conditions. Millions of Nigerians have mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Mental health issues do not care about a person’s historical legacy or the resilience of their battleground – mental health problems will affect anyone regardless of their socio-economic background.

Myth 5: You Can’t Get Help Here in Nigeria

The first misconception that “there aren’t any qualified mental health professionals or resources in Nigeria” makes many believe receiving help is just not an option.

The reality is, the resources may be limited in some areas, but there are a number of people doing professional and dedicated work as mental health practitioners in Nigeria, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and therapists. There are also many organizations and initiatives working hard to provide accessible services to the community. A great way to find a list of mental health professionals as well as support groups that you trust, is to get in touch with local mental health advocates and non-profits.

Takeaway

In challenging these myths, we can ultimately foster a more compassionate and understanding society, and that will allow everyone to feel safe to find the help they deserve.

The post 5 Mental Health Myths Nigerians Need to Stop Believing first appeared on Safe Haven Positivity Initiative.

More men are told to “grin and bear it,” “man up,” and “don’t show weakness!” It is not that we’re not compassionate to those around us, but expectations are placed on us with a staggering mental health impact: while 1 in 10 will battle with depression or anxiety, fewer than half will ever go for help. Suicide is still the most common cause of death for men under 50 in many countries. SHP Initiative is trying to tackle stigma and provide men with science-based tools to help them with their mental health. It’s time to change the narrative – silence is not strength; strength is taking the brave action of healing.

Why the Situation of Men’s Mental Health Is Vastly Underappreciated

1. Stigma: 60% of men say societal pressure prevents them from discussing mental health.

2. Underreporting: Men are 3x less likely than women to seek therapy.

3. High-Risk Coping: Alcohol misuse, aggression, or overworking mask underlying pain.

4. Physical Symptoms: Depression in men often manifests as headaches, anger, insomnia, or reckless behavior—not sadness.

5 Barriers Men Face (and How to Overcome Them)

1. “Asking for Help Is Weakness”
Reframe: Seeking support is strategic—like a coach optimizing an athlete’s performance.

2. “I Don’t Have ‘Real’ Problems”
Truth: Mental health struggles aren’t a contest. Your pain is valid.

3. “Therapy Isn’t for Me”
Try: Male-focused support groups, online platforms (e.g., Headstrong, Man Therapy), or action-based therapy (CBT).

4. “I’ll Burden Others”
Fact: Vulnerability deepens connections. People want to support you.

5. “I Can Handle It Alone”
Science: Isolation worsens stress. Social support cuts depression risk by 50%.

Actionable Strategies for Mental Wellness

1. Redefine Strength
Strength is honesty, not silence. Start small: Text a friend, “Had a rough day—can we talk?”

2. Leverage “Sideways” Communication
– Many men bond through shared activities, not face-to-face chats. Try:
– Talking while hiking, fishing, or working on a project.
– Joining clubs (sports, volunteering, gaming) to build community.

3. Prioritize Physical Health
– Exercise reduces anxiety by 25% (lifting weights releases aggression constructively).
– Sleep 7–9 hours—poor sleep quadruples depression risk.

4. Identify Your Emotional Language
– Can’t articulate feelings? Use metaphors:
“My mind feels like a browser with 100 tabs open.”
“I’m stuck in quicksand.”

5. Professional Support Tailored to Men
– Look for therapists specializing in:
Male identity issues, Anger management, and Trauma (combat, accidents, loss)

5 Warning Signs You Can’t Ignore

1. Irritability: Snapping over small things.

2. Numbing: Excess drinking, gaming, or porn.

3. Withdrawal: Canceling plans, avoiding calls.

4. Physical Pain: Unexplained backaches, digestive issues.

5. Risky Behavior: Reckless driving, fights, unprotected sex.

How Allies Can Help

1. Listen Without Fixing: Say, “That sounds tough. I’m here.”

2. Challenge Stereotypes: Call out jokes like, “Men don’t cry.”

3. Share Your Story: Normalize struggles. Example: “I saw a therapist after my divorce—best decision ever.”

Your mental health isn’t a liability; it’s the foundation of your strength, relationships, and purpose. Ignoring pain doesn’t make you tough; addressing it does. At SHP Initiative, we stand with men who choose resilience over silence. Your journey matters. Start today.

The post 5 Barriers Men Face (and How to Overcome Them) first appeared on Safe Haven Positivity Initiative.
